Aquarion Water Company Urges Customers to Conserve

Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, and Stamford Customers Asked to Take Steps to Conserve Water

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – July 5, 2023 – Aquarion Water Company is experiencing near-record water demands throughout its service area and has hit its first drought trigger in Southwest Fairfield County.  While some areas of Connecticut experienced significant storms in recent days, the rainfall has not made up for the lack of rain in Southwest Fairfield County over the last two months.  Aquarion is now asking customers in Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, and Stamford to reduce their non-essential water use by 10%.

“It is important for all of our customers to assist in our efforts to conserve water,” said Donald Morrissey, Aquarion President.  “By achieving these water usage reductions, Aquarion will be better able to ensure towns have adequate water for fire protection and other critical needs.”

Aquarion customers in Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, and Stamford are reminded to follow the mandatory, twice-weekly irrigation schedule.  This schedule was adopted in 2017 in order to lessen the likelihood of drought and the potential for more severe restrictions later in the summer.  The schedule has been expanded to include 13 towns.  For details visit www.aquarionwater.com/watering

The majority of Connecticut is currently experiencing “abnormally dry” conditions according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), leading to high water demands. During high water demands, customers may experience temporary low water pressure and/or possible water discoloration. These issues will resolve themselves as water usage returns to normal levels.

In order to use water more efficiently, Aquarion offers customers the following ten tips:

Five ways to conserve water outdoors

  • Set your irrigation system to the twice-weekly schedule.
  • Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting.  A taller lawn provides shade to the roots and helps retain soil moisture, so your lawn requires less water.
  • Adjust your sprinklers so that they're watering your lawn and garden, and not the street or sidewalk.
  • Turn off your irrigation system and use hand watering or drip irrigation for shrubs and flowers.
  • Inspect your overall irrigation system for leaks, broken lines or blockage in the lines. A well-maintained system will save you money, water, and time.

Five ways to conserve water indoors
  • Turn off the water while lathering up, shaving, or brushing your teeth.
  • Minimize baths and the amount of water you use for each. Trim one minute off the length of your showers.
  • Wash only full loads in your dishwasher and washing machine.
  • Hand wash dishes in a pan or the sink, not under continuous running water.
  • Reuse dehumidifier water or use a bucket to capture shower and bath water while you wait for it to warm up; then use the water to water your plants.
