Aquarion Water Company to Begin Infrastructure Project in Millbury
$200,000 PFAS Treatment Grant to help fund new water treatment facility and ensure high-quality, safe drinking water in Millbury
Millbury, MA – September 13, 2024 – Aquarion Water Company announced today that it will begin construction this week on a new water treatment plant at its Oak Pond well site in Millbury. The new water treatment facility will remove Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) from the Oak Pond Well water supply and ensure compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations.
Aquarion received a $200,000 PFAS Treatment Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) to support the project’s design and implementation. The facility’s construction is also being financed by a loan from the MassDEP State Revolving Fund (SRF) program, which is administered by the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust. The new facility will remove PFAS from the water supply using granular activated carbon as well as pH adjustment, corrosion control, and disinfection.
The contractor for the project is R.H. White Construction Company and typical work hours will be weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The project is expected to begin on Friday and be completed by the end of 2025. There will likely be a moderate increase in truck traffic near the project site for construction vehicles and deliveries.

We also want to assure our Millbury customers that even with the Oak Pond well offline, we continue to have an adequate supply of clean, safe drinking water from our other two Millbury sources to meet the community's needs.”
After Aquarion voluntarily and proactively tested for PFAS chemicals in Millbury’s three water supply well locations in October 2019, the company took the Oak Pond well offline due to elevated concentrations of PFAS, which exceeded the MassDEP’s health advisory level at the time.
